Participants:A total of more than 100 participants from Taiwan and the United Kingdom attended the Meeting. Mr. Nigel Griffiths, Minister for Small Business and Louis Tzen, Representative of Taipei Representative Office in the UK were invited to provide keynote speech. The participants from both sides also exchanged views on specific cooperation plans in the future, and topics related to “Effects and Business Opportunities after Taiwan’s Accession to the WTO” and “Exploring the possibilities of collaboration for entry into China’s market”.
Important Discussion Subjects & Conclusion:
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals Group: The patent-generating intensity and strength of Taiwan’s bio-tech and pharmaceutical companies in Taiwan are growing rapidly. At the same time, our government is mapping out its strategy with concrete steps and incentive measures to promote the development of the biotechnology industry. There exist tremendous opportunities for future cooperation based on mutual interest and available resources.
IT and Telecommunications Group: The participants in this group exchanged views on the topics of “Mobile 2.5 and 3G Technologies”, “Internet Appliances”, “E-business Technologies” and “Embedded Technology”. To materialize the discussion topics, the concrete actions to be taken are: To invite British scholars or experts in the field of telecom to deliver speeches at the “Digital Content Conference” to be held in Taipei in 2002. In addition, a software delegation, organized by the Institute of Information Industry, will visit UK in September, 2002.
Infrastructure, Retail Development and Professional Services Group: Discussions were taken focused on issues of “Public-Private Partnership” and “Joint Exploration of the Mainland China Market”. The British side organized an Intelligent Building delegation to visit Taiwan in June, 2002 and a seminar was held during their visit.
