Participants:A total of more than 70 participants from Taiwan and the United Kingdom attended the Meeting. Mr. Steve Ruey-Long Chen, Vice Minster, Ministry of Economic Affairs of ROC and Mr. Alan Johnson were invited to provide keynote speeches. Mr. John Deng, Vice Chairman of Mainland Affairs Council, Executive Yuan also made a speech on “Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Relationship during lunch.
Important Discussion Subjects & Conclusion:
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals Group: Items for cooperation between UK and Taiwan include transgenic plants, transgenic animals, clinical trials, herbal medicines, and contract research and manufacturing of bio/pharmaceuticals. Forms of collaboration identified include licensing in technology and product, and collaborative clinical development.
Aerospace and Engineering Group: : Opportunities identified include (A) cross-strait passengers and freight market after WTO accession; (B) Taiwan to utilize its human resource advantages to excel in areas such as design and high-tech nice manufacturing; (C) pursuit of the “Bilateral Airline Safety Agreement” to assure the components from Taiwan meet the UK certification requirements.
Information Technologies and Telecommunications Group: Participants in the group agreed to set up a sub-committee and meet once or twice before the next TBBC Joint Meeting to review on areas for further collaboration. Areas identified include: Internet and E-business technologies, Mobile commerce and wireless applications, and Regulatory development and international standards such as XML, SET/SSL and TWAIN.
Infrastructure and Retail Development Group: Identified markets for cooperation include Taiwan, Mainland China and Asia-Pacific region. Identified sectors of interests include airport construction, retail business and shopping centers and intelligent building project.
