Participants:A total of more than 60 participants from Taiwan and the United Kingdom attended the Meeting. Mr. Richard Caborn, MP, Minister for Trade and Mr. Louise Tzen, Taipei Representative Office were invited to make an opening address. Mr. Andrew Fraser, Chief Executive of also provided a speech on “The United Kingdom: Taiwan’s Investment Partner in Europe.”
Important Discussion Subjects & Conclusion:
Biotechnology
and Pharmaceuticals Group:The Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals Group would be constructing a Business plan outlining strategy but are likely to concentrate on human genomes initially.
Aerospace
and Engineering Group:The Aerospace and Engineering Group proposed to utilize organizations such as Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) and the Committee for Aviation and Space Industry Development (CASID) to bring together British and Taiwanese SMEs. The Group would also identify areas and organizations that would benefit from combined R&D.
Infrastructure
and Retail Development:The Retail and Infrastructure Group were provided with details of forthcoming infrastructure projects in Taiwan which would provide a basis for further discussion and potential collaboration between members. Taiwan members would be identifying specific projects and UK members would be identifying specific capabilities that would complement each other.
IT and Telecoms:The Information Technology and Telecoms Group was upbeat on the prospects for greater collaboration. A number of activities, which would help to promote partnerships, were already being arranged to coincide with major industry events in 2000 such as CeBIT in Hanover, WCIT and Computex in Taipei and a seminar in the margins of Taipei Telecom.
