Participants:A total of more than 50 participants from Taiwan and the United Kingdom attended the Meeting. Mr. Yi-Fu Lin, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs and Dr. Jeffrey L.S. Koo, Ambassador-at-large & Chairman, EATO were invited to make opening remarks. Dr. Paul C.H. Chiu, Minister of Finance and Mr. Adair Turner, Director General, Confederation of British Industry also provided speeches respectively on “The Current State of Taiwan’s Financial Development and Important Fiscal and Financial Policies” and “Britain, EMU and the World Economy.”
Important Discussion Subjects & Conclusion:
Third Country Cooperation
There potential areas for joint exploration of business opportunities include the emerging markets in Mainland China and Balkan countries (e.g., Kosovo, Macedonia, etc.).
Technological Collaboration
The following areas for possible technological collaboration between Taiwan and Britain are identified:the ongoing privatization and commercialization of state enterprises both in the financial and industrial sectors; the Asia-Pacific region’s aviation industry; pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and other life sciences; electronics development; the retailing sector, particularly with the increased globalization of business which requires increased global sourcing and global marketing; the area of maintenance.
A Sector by Sector Approach
Discussion also touched on new sectors the TBBC should pursue with particular attention. Among those identified are Retail/Financial Service (e.g., electronic banking)、Biotechnology、Aerospace、Infrastructure Development、Information Technology (both software and hardware).
